This research area develops models and indicators to analyze the innovative dynamics that support the transition towards a circular economy (CE). It examines the interactions between businesses, universities, and institutions at the local level; explores global interconnections and their international impacts; addresses employment challenges linked to skills transformation and wage disparities; and investigates regional policies for innovation and smart specialization.
The circular economy offers an alternative to the linear model of production, based on reuse, repair, and recycling of materials and products to extend their lifecycle and reduce waste. Its benefits include reduced emissions, greater availability of raw materials, decreased waste, enhanced competitiveness, and the creation of new job opportunities.
At the European level, the New Circular Economy Action Plan (2020), a pillar of the Green Deal, aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 through sustainable business models and eco-designed products. Italy has adopted the National Circular Economy Strategy and the National Waste Management Program, which set out concrete objectives and measures. The National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) also plays a key role in accelerating this transition.
Within this framework, the research area develops analytical tools to assess the effects of circular innovation and to foster ecosystems that combine sustainability, competitiveness, and social inclusion.
