Finanziato dal Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), Missione 4 (Infrastruttura e ricerca), Componente 2 (Dalla Ricerca all’Impresa), Investimento 1.3 (Partnership Estese), Tematica 9 (Sostenibilità economica e finanziaria di sistemi e territori).

Born under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, GRINS promotes a resilient, inclusive and sustainable growth through data-driven research and knowledge transfer.
Today, in the post-PNRR phase, the Foundation continues and expands that mission: placing scientific research at the service of people, enterprises, and institutions, through data, analysis, and tools that help interpret complexity and transform it into shared knowledge.
Investment 1.3 of the PNRR — “Extended partnerships among universities, research centers and enterprises for funding basic research projects” — allocated €1.61 billion to create 14 large national research partnerships.
All projects, including GRINS, shared a common goal: strengthening Italy’s research ecosystem and enhancing its participation in European and global value chains, while promoting structured collaboration between the public and private sectors.
As stated by Matteo Cervellati, President of the Foundation and Scientific Director of the project:
“Research today must act swiftly, with a systemic and data-driven vision, to build more resilient, inclusive and sustainable growth. It is our duty to face this new analytical complexity by engaging proactively with enterprises and society.”

GRINS now operates as an interdisciplinary competence center for policy analysis and design based on scientific evidence.
The Foundation works to strengthen the adaptive capacity of economic and social systems in the face of global shocks and long-term transitions — demographic, environmental, technological, and geopolitical — combining fundamental research, applied analysis, and knowledge transfer.
Its activities focus on three core areas:
The GRINS Foundation stands today as a living legacy of the PNRR — a permanent infrastructure for research and knowledge transfer connecting universities, enterprises, and public administrations.
Its ambition is to translate research into real-world impact, fostering growth built on knowledge, collaboration, and collective responsibility toward a sustainable future.
