Founded in 1434, the University of Catania (UniCt) is the oldest university in Sicily. It currently has over 42,000 students, 1,034 faculty members, 216 researchers, and 1,125 administrative staff.
Piazza Università, 2, 95124 Catania, Italy
The educational system at UniCt is managed and overseen by 17 Departments, a School of Medicine, and two additional teaching units, located in the cities of Ragusa and Syracuse, respectively.
Another special unit is the Scuola Superiore di Catania, a center of higher education founded in 1998 to select and recognize the brightest young talents. It offers a variety of study programs including analysis, research, and experimentation. The School has its own laboratories and invests in industrial research in collaboration with many companies in the Etna Valley. It provides highly innovative courses, including pre-university supplementary teaching, master’s programs, advanced postgraduate courses, and doctoral programs.
The governance of the University of Catania consists of a Rector, an Academic Senate, a Board of Directors, a Board of Auditors, an Evaluation Committee, and a General Director, all integral parts of its decision-making policies. The central administration is composed of 12 administrative divisions, each responsible for a specific area of activity and internally subdivided into various organizational units (sectors, services, offices) assigned to particular tasks.
The Research Divisions are organized to provide professors and researchers with the support needed to carry out their scientific activities. They consist of several specific units offering administrative, organizational, and managerial assistance throughout the entire research project lifecycle.
The University of Catania conducts its research activities both within departments and research centers. Departments promote, coordinate, and manage research activities and maintain relationships with external institutions, fostering knowledge transfer. Research centers are established to manage scientific initiatives requiring collaboration among faculty from multiple departments. The departments involved in this program are Economics and Management (with a coordinating role), Physics, Political and Social Sciences, and Agriculture, Food, and Environment.
