It ranks 517th globally (Edurank 517/14,160) and 17th nationally among the 88 higher education institutions in Italy. It currently has over 43,000 enrolled students, placing it among the top three universities in Southern Italy and among the largest universities in the country. UniBa consists of three campuses: one in Bari, and the others in Taranto (Ionian hub) and Brindisi.

UniBa employs more than 1,500 faculty members, affiliated with 22 departments. Its multidisciplinary research is supported by 52 teaching and research centers, and it also offers four inter-university programs. UniBa is organized into two Schools: Sciences and Technologies, and Medicine, covering the full spectrum from basic to applied research.

UniBa’s primary mission is a balanced combination of research, teaching, and third mission activities. The University contributes to the advancement of the country’s cultural, social, and economic well-being by promoting the organization and dissemination of knowledge and the cultural and professional development of students. UniBa fosters the growth of civic awareness, critical thinking, and social inclusion among its students.

It is a strong supporter of gender equality and other principles of non-discrimination, and has recently approved a Gender Equality Plan (the gender report is available here: https://www.uniba.it/notizieuniba/2021/bdg-gep). In 2008, it was the second university in Italy to adopt a social report (https://www.uniba.it/ateneo/bilancio-sociale).
