PERSONAL CONTACTS
Guglielmo Barone is Full Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bologna. Previously, he was Associate Professor of Political Economy at the University of Bologna (2020–2023), Associate Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Padua (2019–2020), and for fifteen years an economist at the Bank of Italy (2004–2019). He currently serves as Delegate for the Third Mission at his department (2021–2024). He earned his PhD in Statistics from the University of Bologna (2004) and was a Visiting Scholar at NBER (2012). His research interests revolve around the persistent weak growth of the Italian economy over the past thirty years. Against this backdrop, his empirical work focuses on competition and market functioning, regional disparities and local development policies, political economy, and the performance of the public sector. These topics are studied using modern microeconometric techniques for causal analysis. More recently, he has worked as a consultant for the European Commission and for a banking foundation. He also occasionally writes for Il Foglio (and previously for Il Riformista).
