RESOURCES
Reliable road-network performance is important for socio‐economic development and emergency response. This paper investigates road network vulnerability by assessing traffic disruptions on mobility in the Piana del Sele and Irpinia, two inner regions of Campania (Italy). Different scenarios of traffic disruptions were simulated using the PTV-Visum software.
With the use of an accessibility indicator and a link importance index, the network’s weaknesses and strategic routes were identified. The most critical scenario for the Piana del Sele involves the closure of the “Barrizzo” bridge on the SS18, resulting in an average accessibility reduction of 2.22%, affecting 27 homogeneous traffic zones. In Irpinia, the worst scenario is the closure of the tunnel along the A16 motorway in the municipality of Montemiletto, with an average accessibility reduction of 2.42%.
Stakeholders, such as municipal administrators and transportation agencies, who must manage emergencies by suggesting evacuation plans or scheduling infrastructure maintenance interventions, can benefit from using this study as a useful decision-making tool.
